I built the standard Ootek a year before, and found it to be an excellent kayak, with all the characteristics I wanted from it, but foot room was borderline for my size 44 feet. As luck would have it Rob Macks had been working on an Ootek variant with more volume. He contacted me and asked me if I would like to build the prototype of the new design, as his building calendar at the time was full. What follows is the construction of the world's first Ootek-X. My wife now paddles the Ootek, while I Paddle the Ootek-X. They make the perfect pair for a couple with differing vital statistics like ours. The Ootek is 17.5 ft --- The Ootek-X is 18.5 ft, and suitable for large feet.
